İdil Map Poster
İdil is a district town in Şırnak Province in southeastern Turkey. It sits where the uplands of the Tur Abdin plateau begin to drop toward the plains of upper Mesopotamia. On a map, the streets climb and curve along a hillside, with dense housing near the historic core and newer blocks spreading out along the approach roads.
The town has a long Syriac Christian history and is known in Syriac as Azakh. For centuries it was part of the Tur Abdin region, which holds one of the oldest surviving concentrations of Syriac monasteries and villages in the world. Today its population is largely Kurdish, and the town serves as a local centre for the surrounding villages.
