Ijebu Ode is the traditional centre of the Ijebu people, in Ogun State in south-western Nigeria. From above, the town has an organic street pattern. It is built around an old core, and lanes wind between compounds while main roads run outward to neighbouring towns. Over time, newer quarters have filled the spaces between those routes and blurred the edges into surrounding farmland and bush.
The town is the seat of the Awujale, the paramount ruler of Ijebuland. It is widely known for the Ojude Oba festival, a large annual gathering where families and age groups parade in elaborate dress to honour the king. Its position between Lagos and Ibadan has long made it a commercial town, and the roads show this: they lead in every direction.
An Ijebu Ode map poster shows a place that grew in a very different way from gridded colonial cities. There's no single axis. Instead, the pattern thickens toward the old centre and loosens toward the edges. In monochrome, those differences in density become the main subject of the print.
