Imperial lies in California's Imperial Valley, just north of El Centro and not far from the Mexican border. The valley sits low, close to or below sea level, and from above the whole landscape is geometry: section-line roads meet at right angles, and irrigated fields fill the squares between them in regular blocks.
Water makes this possible. Canals and drains carry Colorado River water across the valley, and they show up on the map as thin straight channels alongside the roads. The town itself is a tidy grid of residential streets that expands outward in newer subdivisions, surrounded on all sides by farmland.
