Indāpur is a town in Maharashtra, one of the many places in the state where a busy road corridor passes a market centre surrounded by farmland. From above, the densest area is a knot of narrow lanes near the middle. Wider roads leave it in several directions, and houses thin out along them before open ground takes over.
The landscape around it is organised by the seasons. Field boundaries form a patchwork of small plots, and dry beds of seasonal streams wander through them, filling during the monsoon. The pattern on the ground is far from a planned grid. It is a network that has grown one lane and one plot at a time, which gives the map its detailed, handmade quality.
