Ismayilli lies in northern Azerbaijan, on the southern flank of the Greater Caucasus, between the mountains and the flat lands of the Kura basin. Its map shows a compact town built along the main road linking Shamakhi with Gabala, with streets arranged on gently sloping ground and river valleys cutting down from the heights to the north.
The district around the town is known for its mountain villages. Lahij, set in a gorge in the mountains, is famous for copper craftsmanship and stone-paved streets, while Ivanovka is known as a village founded by Russian Molokans in the nineteenth century. Forests, orchards and vineyards cover much of the landscape, and the region has a long winemaking tradition.
