Itabaiana is in the state of Paraíba, in northeastern Brazil, in the agreste, the transitional zone between the humid coast and the dry sertão. The Paraíba River passes near the town. Historically Itabaiana grew as a market and railway town serving the surrounding farmland.
It is also the birthplace of Sivuca, the accordionist and composer who took the music of the Brazilian northeast to international stages. His name is an important part of the town's identity, and it is often the first thing people from elsewhere learn about Itabaiana.
