Cachoeira River
The river loops through the city centre. Its winding course sets the direction of the streets around it and gives the map its main shape.

Itabuna Map Poster & Print
Itabuna lies inland in southern Bahia, in a region long known for cacao. The Cachoeira River winds through the city, and on a map it forms the main line that the streets follow. The centre sits along the river's banks, and neighbourhoods spread outward over rolling, green hills.
Itabuna grew as a trading centre for cacao farms in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and it is closely linked with the nearby coastal city of Ilhéus. The writer Jorge Amado, whose novels described the cacao region, was born in the area that belongs to Itabuna today.
An Itabuna map poster shows a city where river and hills work together. The Cachoeira's loops break up the grid, bridges stitch the two banks together, and the streets bend to follow the contours. The result is a lively composition with plenty of curves.

River bridges
Several bridges connect the neighbourhoods on each bank. They appear as short, firm lines crossing the curving water.
Hillside districts
Outer neighbourhoods climb the surrounding hills, so their streets curve and branch instead of following a straight grid.
