Itapecerica lies in west-central Minas Gerais, in the rolling country that stretches between the state's old gold region and its farming interior. It is one of the region's older towns. Its centre grew on uneven ground, and the streets rise and fall with the land, turning where the slopes demand.
From above, the historic core is a small, dense cluster of irregular blocks, with churches and squares marking the key points. Newer neighbourhoods spread outward along the main roads. Beyond them, the land opens into pastures, streams and wooded hills, crossed by rural roads that link the town to farms and villages.
