Ivanovo lies in Brest region in southwestern Belarus, in the heart of Polesia, a low, flat landscape of wetlands, rivers and forests. The town has a compact centre of regular streets, with the railway on one side and newer housing on the others. Straight drainage canals cross the surrounding land, left from efforts to turn marshes into farmland.
Before the Second World War the town was known as Janów Poleski. It is linked with Saint Andrew Bobola, the Jesuit missionary martyred here in 1657, and the artist Napoleon Orda was born nearby. These associations bring visitors to a town that otherwise lives quietly among its fields and waterways.
