Ja Ela lies in the Western Province of Sri Lanka, on the flat coastal lowland between Colombo and Negombo. On a map the town stretches along the main road and railway running north from the capital, with a dense mix of streets on either side and wetlands, lagoons and waterways spreading toward the sea to the west.
The area is part of the growing suburban belt around Colombo, and many residents travel into the city for work. To the west lies the Muthurajawela wetland, a large protected marsh that connects to the Negombo Lagoon, one of the main natural features of this part of the coast.
A Ja Ela map poster shows the contrast between the dense town along the main road and the open, watery land to the west.
