Jaboticatubas is north of Belo Horizonte, in the region leading up to the Serra do Cipó. Part of the Serra do Cipó National Park lies within the municipality. The town itself is small and compact. Its streets gather around a central core and then open onto hilly countryside where there are only a few roads.
As the map moves toward the mountains, it becomes emptier. Roads follow valleys, and streams cut through the landscape as they flow down from the rocky uplands. Here the Espinhaço range rises in rugged ridges, and the protected land of the park shows up as a large area with very little built detail.
