Jagdīspur is a town in Bhojpur district in western Bihar, on the broad, fertile plain of the Ganges basin. The land around it is flat and intensively farmed, with villages spread across the countryside and linked by small roads. From above, the town forms a dense cluster in the middle of a patchwork of fields and water bodies.
The town is closely tied to Babu Veer Kunwar Singh, the zamindar of Jagdīspur. In his late seventies he became one of the leading figures of the 1857 uprising against the East India Company. He remains a celebrated figure in Bihar, and Jagdīspur is remembered above all as his home.
The centre of town is made up of narrow, closely packed lanes that open into broader roads leading to Ara and the surrounding villages. Ponds and fields press close to the built-up edge.
