Janesville is built on both sides of the Rock River in southern Wisconsin. The river runs through the city from north to south, and downtown sits right on its banks, with several bridges connecting the two sides. On the map, the water forms the central axis of the city.
Beyond the centre, residential neighbourhoods are arranged in a grid, which shifts in places to follow the bends of the river and the slopes of its valley. Parks along the water, including Traxler Park, and the Rotary Botanical Gardens, near a small lake, open up green spaces in the street pattern.
For much of the twentieth century, Janesville was home to a large General Motors assembly plant, which closed in 2008. The Parker Pen Company was also founded here. A Janesville map poster shows how the city is organised around its river, with bridges, parks and neighbourhoods on either bank.
