Jānsath is a town in the Muzaffarnagar district of western Uttar Pradesh, on the fertile plain between the Ganges and the Yamuna. From above, the old core is a tight mass of narrow lanes and closely packed buildings. It thins out quickly into agricultural land divided into long rectangular fields.
The town has a notable place in Mughal-era history. It was associated with the Sayyids of Barha, and in particular with the Sayyid brothers, who acted as powerful kingmakers at the Delhi court in the early eighteenth century. Traces of that period survive in the older quarters, though the modern town is chiefly a market centre for the surrounding farms.
