Jaranwala lies in the Faisalabad District of Pakistan's Punjab, on some of the flattest and most intensively farmed land in the region. Seen from above, the town is a compact knot of streets surrounded by a patchwork of fields, divided by irrigation channels and long roads running out towards neighbouring towns and villages.
Like many towns in central Punjab, Jaranwala grew as a trading and service centre for its agricultural hinterland, and its markets deal in the crops of the surrounding countryside. The older core has narrow, irregular lanes, while newer housing and commercial strips extend along the main roads leading out of town.
