Jatibonico lies in the east of Sancti Spíritus province, close to the border with Camagüey. The Carretera Central, the long highway that runs the length of Cuba, passes through the town and forms the strongest line on the map. Most of the streets are arranged on a grid along it, typical of Cuban provincial towns that grew up beside the main road.
The town's history is tied to sugar. A large sugar mill defined the local economy for generations, and on the map railway lines, industrial buildings and fields of cane surround the residential blocks. The river that shares the town's name runs nearby and has long been used as a rough boundary between the provinces in this part of the island.
