Jocotenango lies directly north of Antigua Guatemala in the Panchoy valley of Sacatepéquez, so close that there is no clear break between the two towns. On the map, Antigua's colonial grid runs straight into Jocotenango's streets, and together they fill the flat valley floor. Coffee farms and wooded slopes border them and rise toward the surrounding mountains.
The town has colonial roots of its own, and its baroque church faces a broad plaza. From the valley, the volcanoes Agua, Fuego and Acatenango can be seen to the south and west. They are part of the dramatic setting that Jocotenango shares with its better-known neighbour, even though it is a quieter, largely residential place.

The regular blocks, the plaza in front of the church and the roads leading out of the valley sit together in a compact, orderly composition.
