Jovellanos is a town in Matanzas Province, in western central Cuba. It grew in the nineteenth century with the island's railways and sugar industry. From above, it has a clear rectilinear street grid, typical of Cuban towns of that period, with the railway line cutting across the plain close to the centre.
The surrounding land is flat to gently rolling and largely agricultural. Fields and farm roads spread out in broad shapes. The town has a strong Afro-Cuban cultural heritage, with religious and musical traditions linked to the people brought to work on the region's plantations.
