Juazeiro lies on the south bank of the São Francisco River in northern Bahia, directly across from Petrolina in Pernambuco. A bridge links the two cities, and on the map the broad river divides one urban area between two states. The riverfront and older centre sit close to the water, while newer districts spread inland across flat, dry land.
The region is part of the semi-arid sertão, but irrigation from the São Francisco has turned it into one of Brazil's important fruit-growing areas, known for grapes and mangoes. From above, this shows clearly: the city is surrounded by rectangular irrigated plots, canals and farms that contrast with the dry land beyond. The river itself, with its islands, is the central feature.
