Jucurutu lies in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte, in the semi-arid sertão of northeastern Brazil. The town grew beside the Piranhas river. From above, its streets form a compact, fairly regular grid near the riverbank. Beyond the last blocks, the landscape opens into caatinga scrub, dirt roads and irregular fields.
The river is the defining element of the map. In a dry region, its course and the greener land along it give the plan a clear direction, and the town's main roads follow or cross that line. The Piranhas-Açu system is one of the most important rivers in the state, and reservoirs along it support farming across the region.
