Kaélé is the main town of Mayo-Kani department in Cameroon's Far North Region. The landscape here is Sahelian: open, dry for much of the year, and flat, with isolated rocky hills rising out of the plain in parts of the region. From above, the town appears as a compact cluster of streets and compounds, surrounded by fields that are farmed mainly during the rainy season.
As a departmental centre, Kaélé brings together roads from surrounding villages and serves as a local market and administrative hub. Its street pattern mixes a few wider roads with a network of smaller tracks between family compounds, which is common in towns of the region. Seasonal watercourses cross the plain, often dry for months but visible as faint lines on the map.
