Kailāras lies in Morena district in the north of Madhya Pradesh, on the broad plain between Gwalior and the Chambal river country. The town is compact. Its older lanes are close together and irregular, bazaars line the main roads, and newer houses spread outward in loose blocks where the land is flat and easy to build on.
The surrounding land is farmland, and Morena district is known across India for its mustard, which turns the fields yellow in late winter. On the map the farmland shows as a patchwork of tracks and field lines spreading out from the town. The houses sit at the centre, like a knot where all the roads come together.
The town lies on the rail line between Gwalior and Sheopur, a long rural route that has served this part of the Chambal region for more than a century.
