Kaïs lies in Khenchela province in northeastern Algeria, on the high plains to the north of the Aurès mountains. The land around it is open and relatively flat, farmed for cereals and grazing, while the mountain ranges rise to the south. The town sits in the middle of this wide landscape.
From above, Kaïs has a fairly compact layout. Main roads cross at the centre, and residential streets spread outward in a mostly regular pattern, with newer districts on the edges. Beyond the town, the map becomes open country: field boundaries, tracks and dry streambeds that carry water only after rain.
