Kakonko is the headquarters of a district in Kigoma Region, in western Tanzania, not far from the border with Burundi. The country around it is hilly and green, with small farms spread over the slopes and valleys. As the district centre, the town has the administrative offices, markets and road junction that serve a large rural area.
From above, Kakonko is small and open. A handful of main roads meet in town, and the streets around them are loosely spaced, with plenty of room between buildings. Beyond that, tracks and paths branch across hillsides into scattered farmland, and valley bottoms show where water collects in the rainy season.
