Kallar Kahar lies in Chakwal district in the Punjab, in the Salt Range, the band of hills that crosses northern Pakistan between the Indus and the Jhelum. Its defining map feature is the lake beside the town, a shallow, saline body of water that fills a basin among the ridges.
The town is known for the peacocks that live around its gardens and shrines, and for Takht-e-Babri, a stone platform associated by tradition with the Mughal emperor Babur. It also lies close to the M-2 motorway, and the steep climb through the Salt Range makes it a familiar stop for travellers between Lahore and Islamabad.
