Kalliyoor lies on the southern outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. From above it reads as a patchwork rather than a centre: small roads wind between houses, coconut groves and low ridges, and open paddy fields appear as smooth gaps in the fine mesh of lanes.
Water is an important part of the picture. Vellayani Lake, one of the larger freshwater lakes in the district, lies close by, and its irregular shoreline brings a broad, calm shape into the map. Canals and field drains cross the low ground, while the higher land carries denser housing and the roads that connect it to the city.
