Kālpi sits on the south bank of the Yamuna in the Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh, part of the Bundelkhand region. The old town stands on high ground above the river. On a map its tight, irregular lanes contrast with the broad sweep of the Yamuna and the sandbanks that appear along it in the dry season.
Around the town, the land is cut by the deep ravines typical of the Yamuna and its tributaries. They show up as broken, branching shapes where roads and fields cannot run straight. A Kālpi map poster captures this dramatic edge, with the river, the gullies and the compact historic town all in one frame.
Kālpi is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of the sage Vyasa, and it was an important fort town for centuries. During the rebellion of 1857 it served as a base for Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and Tatya Tope. The town is also known for handmade paper, a craft still practised in its workshops.
