Kamalāpuram lies on the southern edge of Hampi in Karnataka, close to the ruins of the fourteenth to sixteenth century Vijayanagara capital, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the map, the town is a compact cluster of streets set in an extraordinary landscape of granite outcrops. Rocky hills and scattered boulders surround it, breaking up the land into irregular pockets of fields and paths.
To one side lies a large tank, a reservoir fed by old irrigation channels, whose outline is one of the strongest shapes on the map. The Archaeological Survey of India runs a museum in Kamalāpuram that displays sculpture and objects from the Hampi site. Roads lead north through the ruins toward the Tungabhadra River.
