Kampene is a town in Maniema province, in the eastern part of the Congo basin, surrounded by rainforest and farm clearings. On a map it appears as a compact settlement, a small network of streets and houses with unpaved roads running out through the forest to nearby villages. Around it the land is broken by streams and patches of cultivation.
The Kampene area is known for mining, and gold in particular has drawn people and activity to this part of Maniema. That shows in how the settlement has grown, spreading along the tracks that link it to the surrounding mining and farming areas. Getting here overland is still slow, and the roads leading out of town are the main connections to the wider region.
