Ayer Keroh is the inland district most visitors pass through first on the way to Melaka, because it sits by the exit from the North–South Expressway. From above it looks quite unlike the dense historic port city on the coast. The streets are laid out loosely, with large institutional plots, wide roads and many patches of green between them.
The recreational core forms a cluster around a lake, with the Melaka Zoo and other leisure grounds nearby, so a large part of the map is open land and water. Around it are the state administrative complex, university grounds and newer housing estates set in looping, self-contained layouts connected by broad arterial roads.
