Kāndi is a subdivision town in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, west of the Bhagirathi. The land around it is low and level, part of the Bengal plain. From above, the town is a dense cluster of lanes and small roads that grew without an overall plan. Farmland and rural settlements spread in every direction around it.
This is a region of water as much as land. Ponds and tanks dot the landscape, and rivers and channels cross the plain on their way to the Bhagirathi. On a map, these become small shapes and curving lines scattered among the streets and fields, giving the composition a fine, detailed texture.
