Kappiyara lies in Kanyakumari district, the southernmost district of Tamil Nadu, close to the border with Kerala. The land here is green and densely planted, with coconut palms, paddy fields and small waterways, and the Arabian Sea coast is only a few kilometres away. Settlement in this region is spread out, with houses lining roads through the trees rather than forming dense blocks.
