Karhal is a town in Mainpuri district, Uttar Pradesh, in the Doab, the fertile plain between the Ganges and the Yamuna. The land is flat and intensively farmed. On a map, the town appears as a compact cluster of streets where several roads meet, surrounded by an even patchwork of fields.
The centre is a dense web of narrow lanes, typical of market towns on the plain, while newer houses spread along the approach roads. Irrigation channels cross the farmland, and villages dot the landscape at fairly regular intervals. With no hills or coastline, the map takes its shape entirely from roads and settlement.
