Karlstad is the capital of Värmland in western Sweden. It was founded in 1584 by Duke Charles, later King Charles IX, and it takes its name from him. The city is built on the delta of the Klarälven, where the river divides into several branches before entering Lake Vänern, the largest lake in Sweden. It is known as the Sun City for its sunny weather.
On the map the delta shapes everything. Water channels separate the islands and districts, bridges connect them, and the city centre sits on land surrounded by river arms. To the south the shoreline breaks into bays, headlands and small islands along Vänern.
A Karlstad map poster shows a city held together by water and bridges. Among them is Östra bron, a long stone arch bridge over the eastern arm of the river, one of the longest of its kind in Sweden.
