Karmāla is a town and taluka headquarters in Solapur district, in southern Maharashtra. It sits on the flat to gently rolling land of the Deccan plateau, where black soil, long dry seasons and patches of irrigated land define the countryside. The town has an older, denser centre of narrow lanes, ringed by newer housing and roads.
Its best-known landmark is the Kamala Bhavani temple, an eighteenth-century shrine associated with the Nimbalkar family, which draws pilgrims from across the region. On a Karmāla map poster, the older quarters around the temple appear as a compact tangle of streets. The straighter roads leading out of town stand in clear contrast.
Beyond the town, the landscape opens into fields crossed by roads to Solapur, Pune and Ahmednagar. The backwaters of the Ujani dam on the Bhima river extend into parts of the taluka.
