Kars Map Poster
Kars sits on a high plateau in northeastern Turkey, at around 1,750 metres, and its map has two distinct characters. On the northern side, a steep hill carries the medieval citadel above the narrow Kars River. To the south spreads a strikingly regular grid of streets, laid out during the period of Russian rule between 1878 and 1918.
That grid is still lined with stone buildings from the Russian period, which gives the city a look unlike most of Anatolia. Kars is also the setting of Orhan Pamuk's novel Snow, and the ruins of the medieval Armenian capital of Ani lie a short drive to the east, on the gorge that marks the border with Armenia.
A Kars map poster captures the contrast between the tight bend of the river under the castle and the calm rectangles of the newer town. On paper the plateau appears as open space around the edges, a reminder of how exposed this city is to its long, snowy winters.
