Kasongo-Lunda is a town in Kwango province, in south-western Democratic Republic of the Congo, not far from the border with Angola. It is the centre of a large, sparsely populated territory of the same name. The landscape around it is a mix of open plateau savanna and valleys lined with forest along the rivers that drain toward the Kwango.
From above, the town is a loose network of streets and plots rather than a dense centre. The roads that link it to the rest of the region are the strongest lines on the map. Beyond the town, the land opens into wide plateau crossed by thin lines of rivers.
