Katoke lies in Uganda's Western Region, in a landscape of rolling hills and farmland to the east of the Rwenzori highlands. From above, the town is less a dense grid than a meeting point: a handful of main roads converge, and around them a looser pattern of lanes, plots and homesteads spreads out into the countryside.
Towns like Katoke tend to grow along their roads, with shops and trading plots concentrated near the junctions and houses becoming more scattered further out. On a map, that produces an organic, branching shape rather than a fixed outline. Footpaths and minor tracks link the smaller settlements that surround it, forming a fine network across the fields.
