Kawambwa is a district town in Luapula Province, in the far north of Zambia, set on high ground east of the Luapula River valley. On a map, the town is a small, loose network of streets around a few main roads that lead out across the plateau. Beyond it, the land opens into farmland, woodland and the clearly bounded shapes of cultivated estates.
The area is best known for tea. Kawambwa is one of the few places in Zambia where tea is grown on an estate scale, thanks to the higher rainfall of this part of the plateau. Nearby, Ntumbachushi Falls draws visitors to a series of cascades in the surrounding bush, one of several waterfalls that make Luapula Province a popular destination for travellers.
