Kawardha is the headquarters of Kabirdham district in Chhattisgarh, in the west of the state near the Maikal range. The town sits on the plain where the hills begin to rise, and from above it forms a compact, dense core with roads leading outward to villages and forest country.
The area is best known for the Bhoramdeo temple, an eleventh-century Hindu temple in the hills a short distance from town. It is often called the Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh for its carved stonework. Kawardha itself was the seat of a former princely state, and its palace remains part of the town's identity.
A Kawardha map poster shows the typical structure of a central Indian district town: an older, tightly built centre, water tanks as open shapes among the blocks and administrative and residential areas spreading along the main roads. The rising country to the west gives the composition a sense of direction.
