Kaya is the capital of Burkina Faso's Centre-Nord region and lies on the main route north-east of Ouagadougou. On a map, the town has a denser centre of streets around its markets and administrative buildings. Beyond it, residential areas spread in a looser grid that fades into open savanna and farmland.
The land here is flat to gently rolling. Seasonal streams and low-lying ground break up the pattern of plots and roads. Kaya is a regional hub for trade and a meeting point for routes from the surrounding countryside. Its layout shows that role, with roads coming in from several directions to meet at the centre.
