Kelkit is a district town in Gümüşhane Province in northeastern Turkey. It sits in the upper valley of the Kelkit River, a long waterway that later flows west and joins the Yeşilırmak. The town lies on a wide, fertile plain between mountain ranges, an agricultural setting that shapes its outline on the map.
From above, Kelkit's centre is a compact network of streets with newer apartment districts around it. Main roads cross the town and lead across the valley to neighbouring districts and provinces. Beyond the built edge, field patterns spread over the plain until they meet the rising slopes.
