Kemrī is a town in Rampur district, Uttar Pradesh, on the fertile plain of Rohilkhand south of the Himalayan foothills. The land is flat and intensively farmed, and the map shows it immediately. A dense core of lanes and houses sits in the middle, and everything around it is a closely divided pattern of fields, paths and irrigation channels.
Roads lead out of town towards nearby villages and the district headquarters. Along them, buildings continue a short way before giving way to farmland. Small ponds and water tanks appear as scattered shapes, typical of settlements on this plain. The overall pattern is of a place that grew slowly and organically rather than according to a plan.
