Kenilworth lies in the heart of Warwickshire, between Coventry and Warwick, and on the map it has two faces. To the west, the large irregular footprint of Kenilworth Castle and its grounds. To the east, the town itself, with an older quarter along the Finham Brook and later residential streets reaching toward the railway.
The castle is one of the most famous ruins in England. In 1575 Robert Dudley entertained Elizabeth I there with lavish festivities lasting weeks, and the site later inspired Walter Scott's novel Kenilworth. A large artificial lake, the Mere, once protected the castle. It was drained in the seventeenth century, and its outline can still be traced in the low ground.
A Kenilworth map poster shows how much green space shapes the town. Abbey Fields, the parkland with the remains of the medieval priory, forms a soft open centre between the castle and the high street. Around it, lanes and closes create a gentle, irregular pattern typical of an old English market town.
