Kesinga is a town in the Kalahandi district of western Odisha, set in open, mostly flat agricultural country. On a map it reads as a compact settlement with the railway running through it. Streets gather close to the line and the station, then thin out quickly into field tracks and scattered villages. The pattern is typical of an Indian market town that grew up around a railway.
The railway is the town's defining feature. Kesinga station lies on the line linking Raipur with Vizianagaram, and much of the town's trade in grain and local produce has moved along that route. From above, the track is the one perfectly straight line in a landscape of winding roads, irrigation channels and field boundaries.
