Kettering stands on rising ground west of the River Ise in Northamptonshire. The map shows a clear, old centre around the parish church and market place. Around it are closely packed Victorian terraces, built when the town grew quickly on boot and shoe manufacturing in the nineteenth century.
Beyond the terraces, later estates and a ring of main roads mark the modern town, and the A14 passes along its northern side. To the south-east lies Wicksteed Park, opened in the 1920s and one of the oldest leisure parks in Britain. Its lake and green space give the map a generous open area.
A Kettering map poster brings out the layers of a working English town: the church and market at the centre, the tight grid of former shoe workers' streets and the broad green of the park.
