Khān Shaykhūn lies in the south of Idlib Governorate, on the open agricultural plain between Hama and Aleppo. Its name recalls the caravan inns, or khans, that once served travellers on this route. On a map, the town is still defined by the road: the main north–south highway runs past it, and the built-up area gathers beside it.
The town became widely known during the Syrian war, particularly after the chemical attack of April 2017, which drew international condemnation. Beyond that history, the map shows an ordinary pattern of a farming town. It has a dense centre of irregular streets, newer blocks at the edges, and fields in every direction.
