Kharhiāl sits in the Nuapada district of western Odisha, not far from the border with Chhattisgarh. From above, the town is a small, dense cluster of lanes set on wide agricultural plains. Main roads lead in from surrounding villages and meet near the centre, where the street pattern is tightest, then thin out quickly as the built-up area gives way to paddy fields.
The shape of the town comes from how it grew. Houses and shops line the approach roads first, so the outline reaches along each route, while the spaces between fill in more slowly. Small tanks and ponds, common across this part of Odisha, show up as quiet blank shapes among the streets, and field boundaries give the edges a faint grid.
