Khariar Road is a town in the Nuapada district of western Odisha, and its name says a lot about its origins. It grew up around the railway station that served the older town of Khariar, some distance away. On a map, the railway line is the key feature, a long straight stroke that the rest of the town lines up along.
Streets and houses spread out on both sides of the tracks. Roads cross the line at a few points and lead into the surrounding countryside. Past the built-up area the land opens into fields and scattered villages, with low hills and forest further out in this part of Odisha, near the Chhattisgarh border.
