Khimki lies just outside Moscow's northwestern boundary, and its map is organised along several strong lines. The Leningradskoye highway and the newer M11 motorway to Saint Petersburg run through the area, while the Moscow Canal and the Khimki Reservoir form a long body of water along the city's southeastern side. Between them, the city spreads in residential districts of apartment blocks.
The reservoir is one of the most distinctive features on the map, a narrow lake created when the canal was built in the 1930s. To the north lies Khimki Forest, a large wooded area that appears as a wide empty space on the map. Its protection became a well-known public issue during the construction of the motorway.
Sheremetyevo, Moscow's largest airport, lies within Khimki's urban district, and its runways appear as sharp straight lines at the edge of the city.
